I like malty beers, but I don’t expect malt to be the dominant characteristic in an American-style pale ale like Pork Slap. (What’s with the name, by the way?) It’s a good beer, just not what I expect in a pale ale.
It’s slightly cloudy with orange-gold color. Malt is dominant in aroma, along with hints of citrus. Very smooth with malt dominant in the flavor. Very slight hops bitterness (not enough for a pale ale).
I would add that this is a very drinkable beer and I’d buy it again. I just wouldn’t call it a pale ale. It tastes more like a red ale or German-style bock.
Also, this beer is only available in cans. Butternuts is one of a number of microbreweries that are now producing beer in cans, in this case only in cans. (I’ll be writing about this next week.)
