It’s a beautiful color, dark brown with ruby highlights. It’s got a rusty brown head that dissipates quickly, and actually has some “legs” (unusual for a beer and indicative of strong alcohol content). It has a surprisingly light aroma with a slight fruitiness, not what I’d expect in a Scotch ale. I get a hint of caramel but generally cleaner smelling than I’d expect.
It’s thick on the tongue, as a strong (8.0% ABV) Scotch ale should be. The taste is malty and sweet, with the alcohol apparent (even though I don’t usually like this, it is characteristic of this beer). Complex as the taste seems to change in the mouth.
This is not a style I normally favor as it’s a bit too sweet for me, but all in all, this is a very good example of this style.
8.5/10 (note that this score is for its style – I would score it lower just by itself as I’m not a huge fan of this style)
