Saturday Beer Review: Stowaway IPA (Baxter Brewing Co.)

NOTE: This is another newer brewery that’s distinguishing itself (not to mention helping the environment, as noted previously on this blog) by delivering its beer in cans.
Appearance: Near perfect color for an IPA: copper-gold, clear with a full-bodied, off-white head.
Aroma: A little less than I expect from an IPA, especially a regular IPA (as opposed to the “over-the-top” Imperial versions that are flying around these days): malt is predominant with an underlying expression of citrus from the hops.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and dry with a slight hint of alcohol (all good for an IPA) but slightly astringent, which I wouldn’t expect in an IPA.
Taste: In spite of the low-key aroma, this is a very well balanced IPA with a nice level of bitterness from the hops but not so much that it’s harsh. Malt and hops are in the right balance. Suggestions of resins in the hops flavor.
Drinkability: Very drinkable and worth checking it (if you can find it: it doesn’t seem widely available in Mass. yet)
7.5/10
