Saturday Beer Review: Larry Imperial IPA (Wachusett Brewing Co.)

Dedicated to Larry Takiff, who provided the beer for this review!

Appearance: Copper with a hint of orange, slightly cloudy with a pure white, sustained head.

Aroma: Surprisingly sweet aroma – the hops don’t completely overwhelm the malt – unusual for this style – although the dominant tone is still citrusy hops with a hint of resin.

Mouthfeel: Alcohol is present (as it generally is in t his style) but not obnoxiously so. Just a general slight burn of alcohol in the mouth. Medium to heavy bodied and chewy. Definite hops bitterness but not excessive.

Taste: Bitter but not astringent. Strong citrus feel with alcohol warmth. Clean and clear malt taste.

Drinkability: This is a very good example of an imperial IPA (a style that has, unfortunately, been taken to extremes by many brewers). It is well balanced with lots of hops bitterness but not so much that you feel like you need to pick your teeth afterward!
